NARRATIVE TEXT

Purpose : focusing specific participants which tells an interesting story. Its social function is to

tell stories or past events and entertain or amuse the readers.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

ö   Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced.

ö   Complication :Where the problems in the story developed.

ö   Resolution :Where the problems in the story is solved.  "happy ending” or "bad ending".

EXAMPLE :

The Sparrow

         Long ago, there was an old man who had an unkind wife. She hated the sparrow which her husband kept as a pet.

         One day, when the men went out, the woman did not give the sparrow anything to eat. The sparrow was hungry, so it ate some rice from the table.

         When the woman saw this, she took a knife and cut the sparrow’s tongue. The poor sparrow flew out of the window.

         When the old man came home, his wife said, “Your stupid sparrow has flown away.” The old man was very upset. He went to the woods to look for his pet. In the evening, he came to a place where sparrows lived. He called his sparrow’s name and it flew to him.

         The sparrow invited the old man to his house for dinner. The sparrow’s wife cooked a lovely dinner for the kind man. When it was time for the old man to go home, the sparrow gave him a box. The old man took the box home and opened it. He was delighted to find silver and gold inside the box.

         Now, the old man’s wife was as greedy as she was unkind. So, on the following day, she visited the sparrow. Again the sparrow’s wife cooked for her a meal. When she wanted to leave, she was also give a box. As she waked home, the box became heavier and heavier.

     When she finally reached home, she found that she had become very old and bent. She also found nothing but stones in the box.
